National Scholarships

Outside of MSU, there are a variety of national awards available for education abroad. Award amounts and criteria vary, including some awards dedicated to study in a particular region or country. These scholarships will have applications and deadlines separate from MSU.


National Scholarships for Education Abroad

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship
Open to U.S. citizen undergraduates who receive a Federal Pell Grant to participate in study and intern abroad programs worldwide. Watch MSU Gilman Information Meeting from fall 2020.

David L. Boren Scholarships and Fellowships
Funding for scholarships (U.S. undergraduates) and fellowships (U.S. graduate students) for the intensive study of language and culture in world regions critical to U.S. interests.

Gilman-McCain Scholarship
Awards for child dependents of active duty service members to study or intern abroad on credit-bearing programs.

Fulbright
Funding opportunities for MSU graduate students or students who have recently graduated from MSU including research projects, English teaching, and graduate study programs.

Diversity Abroad Scholarships
Aimed at increasing education opportunities for non-traditional student populations, the Diversity Abroad Network provides a robust scholarship and fellowship search online.

Fund for Education Abroad
Aimed to increase the number of underrepresented American college students studying abroad through the provision of scholarships, the Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) offers a variety of scholarship opportunities.

Critical Language Scholarship (CLS)
Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, the CLS program is a summer opportunity for students to learn one of 14 languages at an intensive study abroad institute.

Provides an extensive list of scholarships available for specific requirements or university programs.

GoOverseas.com Scholarships
Lists scholarships available for certain program types or locations.

Phi Kappa Phi
Awards grants designed to help support undergraduates as they seek knowledge and experience in their academic fields by studying abroad.

Rotary International Global Grants

Global grants support large international activities with sustainable, measurable outcomes in Rotary’s areas of focus.

Tortuga Backpacks Study Abroad Scholarships
Scholarships are awarded twice a year to passionate students who want to explore the world.

Scholarships that require a specific region or country

Freeman-Asia program
Provides scholarships for U.S. undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia.

Academic Year in Freiburg, Germany (AYF) Alumni Club Scholarships
The AYF Alumni Club offers multiple scholarships through its U.S. and German chapters.

Bridging Scholarship for Study Abroad in Japan
The Bridging Project offers scholarships to American undergraduate students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan.

BUTEX North American Scholarships
BUTEX awards sixteen scholarships to students studying abroad for either a semester or for a whole academic year. Eight scholarships are available to North American students studying in the UK.

Toshizo Watanabe Study Abroad Scholarship Program
This scholarship will support up to the full cost of attendance at a program of the applicant’s choice in Japan. Priority is given to undergraduates who are studying abroad for a year or less and demonstrate financial need for international study.

CEA CAPA Education Abroad
CEA CAP Education Abroad awards academic scholarships, opportunity grants, and custom and faculty-led program scholarships.

CIS Abroad
Scholarships based on need, merit and identity plus grants designed to help students navigate financial barriers.
