Michigan State University has over 75 partners around the world where relationships are already established and our office works closely with them to ensure programs are vetted for health, safety, security and academic rigor.

While the programs will look and function the same way while you are abroad, there are significant costs differences between direct enroll and exchanges.

Direct Enroll

• Students individually enroll as a visiting student in a university abroad.
• Student support services are usually provided by the host institution staff (at varying levels, depending on location), requiring students to exercise more independence and initiative.
• Students pay the host institution tuition and fees.

Exchange

• Students individually enroll as a visiting student in a university abroad.
• Student support services are usually provided by the host institution staff (at varying levels, Students individually enroll in a university abroad.
• Students do not pay the host institution tuition and fees but instead pay MSU tuition.

Both direct enroll and exchange programs are typically offered over spring and fall academic semesters. There are also options offered over summer and for a full academic-year abroad.
