Kimberly with iguana in MexicoThis study abroad experience to Mexico was the best program that I was blessed to go on. I learned so much about the culture in Huatulco and I learned about the way of everyday life for many of the people that live there. This program encourages me to keep going on in life with my education so I can make my ancestors proud. We are people that have worked hard throughout generations, but I know a big dream for many is for the future generations to be more academically educated. This experience showed me how many people work hard and are proud of what they do for a living. This helps me focus on how I want to work and make not only my parents proud but other first-generation students and encouraging one another that we can also do big things in life.

This program affected me on a personal level because not only am I more grateful for everything I have, but I have learned to view life from a new perspective. I have noticed that sometimes I may take things for granted but I learned that you can be happy with not having everything. Seeing the kids that I bonded with at the agency taught me to look back and see how I have always had everything I needed within my family. Of course, I want to get my family out of our situation, which motivates me even more to become the first in my family to get my bachelor’s MSU students with local school children in Mexicodegree. This experience really pushed me to become a better version of myself and accepting all the struggles that come within this new journey of figuring myself out and the career I decide to pursue. I am grateful for this experience and how it has helped shape me into the person that I am today.
