Workshops and Training Sessions

Throughout the academic year, the Office for Education Abroad hosts a workshop series for current and aspiring EA program directors, titled Building an Education Abroad Community of Practice. In addition to upcoming and past workshops in the series, we will post here information about other kinds of EA related learning opportunities.

Upcoming workshops

Exploring an Education Abroad Learning Community

Date: Wednesday, October, 23, 2019
Time: 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm
Location: MSU International Center - Room 303

Description: The strength of Education Abroad (EA) at MSU is the result of a strong nexus of relationships and collaborations between colleges, departments, administrative units, and service and support units, including the central Office for Education Abroad. While these relationships and collaborations arise naturally through the work we do together, the work itself oftentimes does not leave enough time to engage in deeper conversation on issues many of us care about. We have observed a growing interest in opportunities for more informal dialogue on good EA practices and pedagogy, EA research, the development of resources to support MSU faculty and staff engaged in EA, and other topics.

If you’re interested in joining an informal community of likeminded colleagues, please join us for an initial conversation about what an EA Learning Community might look like. We will meet on Wednesday, October 23rd, from 12:00 – 1:30 PM, in room 303 International Center. Bring your lunch and come prepared to share your passion and ideas for EA. The meeting will be convened by Professor Laura Symonds (Neuroscience Program, College of Natural Science) and Dr. Inge Steglitz (Associate Director, Office for Education Abroad).

All are welcome to join us, including but not limited to

  • current and aspiring EA program directors
  • anyone working with EA students before and after their program participation
  • anyone interested in getting involved as we work toward advancing excellence in teaching and learning abroad

Registration for the workshop is required.

Learning at Large: mobility and the economics of growth

Date: Friday, November 1, 2019
Time: 12:00 pm - 1:30 PM
Location: MSU International Center - Room 303

Description: Australian universities are actively expanding access to overseas study experiences for their students, such that 1 in 5 Australian undergraduates now graduate with an overseas experience (AUIDF, 2017). At Monash, initiatives like the Global Immersion Guarantee are actively contributing to this growth, aspiring to provide access to experiences ‘at scale’. Whilst positive for students, growing, and growing rapidly, brings the challenge of sustainability. This session reflects on the ‘economics of growth’ and invites feedback and shared learnings from practitioners across both Michigan State University and Monash University that could inform mutual uplift across both institutions.

Rachel Wellam, Senior Manager, Global Student Mobility, contributes to the development of strategy for student mobility and leads in its implementation at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. Through roles spanning international student support services, international student recruitment, and student mobility, she remains passionate about programming that puts student outcomes at the heart of learning and success.

Craig Wallace, Craig Wallace is the Development Manager, Learning Abroad at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. Craig works to deliver high-impact practices with international partner universities in areas such as undergraduate research, intercultural leadership and the Sustainable Development Goals. He has served in leadership roles at Australian and Canadian universities within the international education sector.
